“Unless I can be convinced by the clear teachings of the Bible that I am wrong, I cannot and I will not retract what I have written. Here I stand. I cannot do otherwise. God help mee. Amen!”
-Martin Luther
Alright guys… today’s post is just gonna be about Reformation day. This is an assignment btw and I’m supposed to write my thoughts on it so here we go.
Reformation day is about Martin Luther and the church and the people. Martin Luther was training to be a pope in the church – but as he became more involved, he realized the way the popes were misdirecting the people and more importantly, not using the church for what God had intended it to be.
The church had been basically taking money from the people by selling indulgences (little things that they claimed you needed in order to get to heaven and stuff), keeping creepy bones of people, did a bunch of extra things that were not really needed, and were missing the whole point of the church.
Even the Bible was basically off limits for the townspeople who couldn’t read… Latin, I believe? The pope’s teachings were more then often NOT right and they were misleading the people, just wanting money and glory for themselves.
So when Martin Luther came along, he was a big inspiration and a very important character in history. When he got access to the Bible (because he learned to read in Latin – remember, he was training to become part of the church), he realized there was no such thing in the Bible that said you needed to earn God’s love! NOTHING at all. Let alone BUY some useless indulgence!
“You cannot keep birds from flying over your head but you can keep them from building a nest in your hair.”
-MARTIN LUTHER
Martin Luther ended up contradicting the pope’s teachings and he made lots of quotes and comments and books. He explained to the people that the Bible said nothing of indulgences. He was one of the (…many?) people who were part of this “turning of the church” when the church’s began splitting into catholic and then Christian.
John Wycliffe and Jan Hus were similar in the way they didn’t agree with the pope’s teachings. All three were amazing heroes in history and there are several more.
A few things I took away from Martin Luther’s story was to:
- Stand up for what you believe
- Look into stuff that you’re not sure of. Martin Luther was looking to become a pope but found the truth and dug deep and thanks to him, (well, really, thanks to the Bible and The Lord) lots of people got corrected from the stray path they had been led onto.
- Be alert. Continue strong in the faith. Have courage, and be strong (1st Corinthians 16:13)
“I have held many things in my hands, and I have lost them all; but whatever I have placed in God’s hands, that I still posses.”
-Martin Luther
God is the true treasure we need to focus on. If He's not our top priority then He's just gonna slip further and further down your life. He's the only one you can find true peace in so remember that! Happy Reformation week lol.
JESUS LOVES YOU.
JESUS DIED 4 YOU.
ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS INVITE HIM INTO YOUR HEART.
