intro
Hi!! Yessss, it’s something a bit different and new! Not Pilgrim’s Progress or Lord of the Rings today. Instead we have the Hobbit, the first movie: An Unexpected Journey.
This one will be similar to the lotr posts – maybe a little bit more brief and smaller. But as you see, I changed up the headings a bit ๐ it’ll be fun! Alrighty, so lets get started!
context
I’ll give you a little bit of backround of the movie but first here’s some important things:
- the Hobbit is supposed to take place before the Lord of the Rings
- this is only a post on the first movie
With that, I’ll tell you a little bit of what the movie is all about by having different sections.
an unexpected party

So there’s a middle aged hobbit named Bilbo who lives in the Shire. He meets Gandalf who ends up marking his door for a meeting (but Bilbo doesn’t know).
Bilbo is just about to sit down an eat his dinner when there’s a knock on the door. Bilbo’s confused; he hadn’t invited anyone over! But in the doorway is a dwarf who invites himself in and helps himself to Bilbo’s dinner. Bilbo is deeply perplexed but polite as always.
More and more knocks come – more dwarves pile in, eating and drinking away Bilbo’s meal supplies – there must be a misunderstanding, right? But finally, dwarves stop swarming in. And Gandalf comes in.
After lots of chaos and craziness, they all sit down and Gandalf explains (mainly to Bilbo) that they’re going onto a journey. It is to get into the mountain which a dangerous dragon Smaug is hoarding the treasury that once belonged to a kingdom in which the wisest dwarf, Thorin Oakenshield used to live.
The reason they needed Bilbo was that they needed a “burglar”. Bilbo’s hobbit feet were perfect for that.
Bilbo wasn’t sure if he agreed.
At first he said “nope, no way” and then they almost left without him, but he changed his mind…just in time.
the start of a very, very, VERY long journey
Bilbo finally decides to go with them, running to catch up. He finally does. Although he isn’t really a fan of sleeping outside, riding a little (ridiculously cute) pony, and fighting, he manages.
You’ve got to give the hobbit at least a little bit of credit.
Bilbo is a man of routine – at least I think he is – and is perfectly content with a simple life. But he drops everything for this ‘unexpected journey’ away from the Shire; all that he knew and loved and was comforted by.

but that gives you a little bit of context for this post ๐ there’s so much stuff that happens on their journey – lots of humor packed into it too!- keeps you engaged very well I’d say. Here’s a cool quote that was in the first movie…
“the world is not in your books and maps, it’s out there.”
-Gandalf
characters
SOOOOOOO. The best part has come, heheheheh. There are SO many cool new characters! I’ll introduce 3

Thorin Oakenshield
He’s the boss of the group haha. He’s very serious and it’s sometimes hard to know what he’s thinking. He’s got sort of an interesting family backround and legacy. He’s a great captain and leader. Good natured and humble.

Bilbo Baggins
This main character is amazing, I love him! He’s very funny (though he doesn’t mean to be) and very smart. He starts out a bit timid but as the movie keeps going, you see he gets more bold and thinks more like that burglar that was in him the whole time.

Kili
YASSSSS! I love Kili!!! He’s amazing ๐ He’s funny and light hearted.
Him and another dwarf named Fili have a strong brotherly bond. they are sorta like Merry and Pippin but in the Hobbit haha
conclusion
Well I hope you’ve enjoyed this post on the Hobbit! Get ready for more to come ๐
