Alright we are going to continue the section of Pilgrim’s Progress, The Interpreter! Let’s get started
context
Okay, so by now Christian has seen quite a few allegories. And he’s about to see a few more.
The first one the Interpreter shows him is kind of disturbing. It’s a man in a cage. He had once lived in the light and preached the gospel, but chose sin and turned away from God. Now he lives in despair.
Then Interpreter shows Christian the next one but this is just supposed to be light context so I’m not explaining the whole thing ๐
But eventually Christian is on his way again, set on the Narrow Road. And he runs down it – not easily for he has a burden – but he comes to this cross.
His burden comes off! And it goes rolling down never to be seen for Christian’s eyes again. Christian is very happy and sees ‘shining ones’, is how Bunyan described them, who clothe Christian in a new outfit.
He was finally free from his burden! Christian was so overjoyed he jumped three times and said basically:
“I am free from the death that held me down! Praise God!”
that’s how I put it anyways, haha. He said it was longer and more old language.
my thoughts
This was a very good one – mostly the ending – and Bunyan did a very good job with his writing! When Christian is freed from the heavy burden, it sort of makes me feel free as well.
I’ll share a bit of what I thought about the man in the cage; just so I touch on that.
It makes me think of how even though we have God’s everlasting love inside us and know the treasure and gift we have in Him – able to receive a relationship with Him – we still get carried away.
Normally, we get carried away in what we think is best for us. But we forget that…
God created us in His image and we are made to be in relationship with Him. He’s what we strive for, even though maybe we don’t realize it.
Anyways, God’s plans are always for the best. Hope you enjoyed reading this week’s post and enjoy the old ones and are excited for the new ones to come!!
Thanks for reading ๐
