Hi! Another Pilgrim’s Progress section to cover. Hope you enjoy my thoughts and this post on Mr. Good Will!
context
This section is obviously right after the encounter with Mr. Legality – which was my last post! – and we ended that one with Christian back on track, because Evangelist’s encouragement and the everlasting love of God.
Here we are now, with Christian back on the narrow, straight path and Evangelist has explained to get to the gate (or door) and “knock, and it shall be opened unto you.”
So when Christian got there he knocked and it did indeed open (though after a few knocks) and a man named Good Will opens the gate and Christian explains who he is and what he wants. Which he obviously wants that burden off.
Good Will and Christian chat for a while and then Good Will gives him some advice and tells him to be on the way still of the narrow straight path and that will lead him to the place to redeem this burden to someone named Interpreter. He would show him good things.
But Christian MUST stay on the narrow road because it is the only way to get that burden off his back.
So off went Christian once again, with that burden on his back.
my thoughts
That was sort of an interesting chapter. When Christian got to Good Will they just talked for most of it about Christian’s journey. It was kind of cool to see all that he had gone through like:
- leaving his home
- his discussion with Pliable and Obstinate (which I didn’t do a post on)
- Pliable coming some ways with Christian but then turning back
- Christian’s encounter with Mr. Worldly Wiseman
- another encounter but with Mr. Legality and surviving that mountain mistake
- and then all the times Evangelist was there to remind Christian of the Narrow Path and of God’s love.
Pretty pretty cool! Even though sometimes it feels like we have so many burdens it’s hard to wake up in the morning, God is always there and he says to give our burdens (worries, struggles, grudges, hopelessness, stress/anxieties) to Him.
It’s a good reminder that we Christians all have awesome and exquisite and unique and life changing stories and testimonies. But we all walk the same way – the narrow path!
We all each struggle with something but we all hold something that the earth could never give us: God’s astounding and everlasting and one-of-a-kind love and beauty.
conclusion
Well I hope you enjoyed this post on Mr. Good Will!! I enjoyed writing about it and glad I get to share my thoughts on it.
Thanks so much for reading! Don’t forget to check out my other posts 😉
