John Bunyan

·

John Bunyan grew up in a poor family his parent’s names were Thomas and Margaret. Thomas was a tinkerer and John helped and traveled with him too.

When John grew up and got married to a Christian woman (they had four kids, one blind), she had a good influence on him. Though he wasn’t exactly living a very Christian life; he actually had a point where he was faking being a man of God.

But then he actually did start wanting to follow God. He started searching scriptures, talking with educated leaders, a pastor Gifford, and eventually started preaching.

Obviously John Bunyan wrote many books. Including the following:

  • Some Gospel Truths Opened (the first book he wrote)
  • The Pilgrims Progress (bestseller!)
  • Grace Abounding
  • The Holy War
  • And more

The first book he wrote – Some Gospel Truths Opened – was actually because John had overheard a person saying that Jesus was not God’s son. So that got him a challenge and he took it.

The book Pilgrims Progress is an allegory about the Christian life. The main character simply named Christian. Bunyan started that book in jail (then he got out) and then also finished the second part of it when he was put back in jail.

John Bunyan was put in jail (Like John Wycliffe) because of his faith and preaching – in 1661. He was sentenced to be banished if he did not repent, but instead ended up in the jail for an additional twelve years.

While he was in the jail he started Pilgrims Progress. But then, finally, after he got out of jail, he was returned (in 1677) where he finished the sequel to Pilgrims Progress that followed Christian’s wife.

People were meeting in secret in underground places, woods, and barns to talk about God and have Christian fellowship. John Bunyan went to these meetings and encouraged them as well

Also like John Wylcliffe, Bunyan stayed strong in his faith towards God. He kept writing and pushed through his books. His books were likable among most of the people

John Bunyan died in 1688 because he was trying to get to his friend’s house even though it was thunder storming. He was soaked to the bone, but luckily he made it and his friend took care of him, but unfortunately he died.

John Bunyan had a great impact in the world! Read his books and maybe check out this video below!
