Still on a kick for Pilgrim’s Progress! Yet another assignment on a section of Pilgrim’s Progress: Christians Dilemma. So let’s get started.
context
Christian’s Dilemma is about how Christian gets the burden in the first place. He reads the book (symbolizing the Bible) and is so distressed because of the Truth. He is very disturbed and tries not to show it to his family but it was almost impossible.
The reason he is so troubled is because he wants to know so badly how to be saved. He wants to repent.
So Christian tells his family about what he read and the Truth he found out. He told them of many things but after awhile they became annoyed by it and hardened and even started to neglect him a little bit.
So Christian runs to a field where he prays and reads the book and cries out loud, “What shall I do to be saved!?” and that is when Evangelist comes in.
Evangelist is Christian’s guide the whole book, basically. Pointing him in the right direction and encouraging him through it all. Evangelist is actually the one asks Christian what he is holding out for. And he is who directs Christian:
“Keep that light in your eye, and go up directly thereto: so shalt thou see the gate; at which, when thou knockest, it shall be told thee what thou shalt do.” -Evangelist
And that’s where the adventure begins. And Christian goes running.
With a book in his hand and a burden upon his back.
thoughts
- it wasn’t a bad length
- it had a lot of scripture references
- it was actually sort of interesting
- it was somewhat easy to understand
